Am I a Victim of Racial Discrimination in the Workplace?
One of the greatest cultural achievements of the United States of America is the diversity of races, traditions and ideas. Unfortunately, not everyone appreciates diversity, and too often discrimination takes places, often towards an individual of a different ethnicity or race. While racial discrimination in public environments cannot always be approached, racial discrimination in the workplace can most definitely be dealt with.
There are local and state laws that contain protection for you in discriminating situations. With that said, if you feel you are being discriminated against or harassed by your employer or coworkers, what can you do?
Make Your Company / Employer Aware
Unfortunately, many acts of racial discrimination proceed unpunished simply because the victim does not clearly state the conduct is unwelcome. It is unlikely an employer would readily admit to discrimination, so it is up to you – the victim – to communicate this injustice.
Take the Matter Seriously
Request a written report be created at the time of your complaint filing. Make it clear that you do not consider this a laughing matter. In fact, it is not unlikely that co-workers – if they find out about your claim – will try to sweep it “under the rug” by making light of the situation, joking about it. Discrimination is not a laughing matter. Remember, employers are required by law to investigate all discrimination claims.
A side note: Employees who falsely report discrimination claims to their supervisor can be subject to legal ramifications.
